Areas of Insurance

When you think of “insurance,” what picture is painted in your mind?

​If you’re like me a year and a half ago, or like most other students I know, your answer would be something like “a bunch of men in a room doing paperwork.” And I don’t blame you. In fact, this is a very common misconception about the insurance industry. However, there are actually many other areas of insurance you might not have known about that consist of so much more than that!​

One thing that I’ve learned throughout my time at the RCIA is that a career in insurance can intersect with various other fields. For instance, during our events, I’ve met professionals in careers such as asset management at insurance firms, insurance marketing, media underwriting, and so much more! 

Two fields that I became particularly interested in are insurance consulting and InsurTech. With regards to insurance consulting, I have been interested in establishing a career in consulting for as long as I could remember. Technology, although a newer interest of mine, was something that I had quickly developed a passion for. Therefore, I knew that I wanted to pursue a mix of both consulting and technology, but before discovering InsurTech, I had never thought of incorporating insurance as well. 

Upon speaking to professionals in InsurTech consulting, I learned quite a few things, some of which were:

1. a job in InsurTech consulting consists of A LOT (!!) of travelling,
2. no two days are ever the same, and
3. there is never a shortage of challenging work.

I realized that those were all things I wanted in my day-to-day during my career. If this sounds like something you’d like as well, maybe it’s time to explore some insurance-related roles! 

Overall, there are definitely many insurance-related opportunities besides traditional insurance that may surprise you. If you’re interested in learning more about any of them, I’d encourage you to come out to some of RCIA’s events! :)
