As a marketing student applying to various internships, I can undoubtedly agree that being a part of RCIA has played a significant part in securing internships and leaving a lasting impression during interviews.
I’ve personally been a part of RCIA since it first started in the latter half of 2020 and I’ve never failed to mention RCIA in all interviews I’ve taken part in ever since. What I’ve noticed is that mentioning myself as being part of an insurance club opens up room for discussion with the interviewer usually asking why I’m interested in an industry that they view as less popular amongst undergraduate students, or them asking about how the club was started and why it was formed.
For undergraduate students at the University of Toronto interested in learning about the insurance industry, there aren’t resources available to support that learning. Another reason why being a part of RCIA is beneficial when applying to internships is that by being a member of RCIA, you become a club that bridges the gap between interested students and professionals in the insurance industry, providing first-hand experience and various career opportunities for them to provide a wider perspective. With that, students are also able to view the broader business world through an insurance lens and learn about how it relates to other fields of business such as finance, technology, consulting, and marketing.
With the insurance industry being oftentimes, an overlooked industry, becoming a member of RCIA can definitely make you seem like a unique candidate and one that is more in tune with ever changing face of business. My time here at RCIA is amazing as I got to learn a lot about an industry I didn’t know much of from peers, events, and through the work. Even more so being someone interested in marketing, I was surprised to learn how interrelated the two industries are so I definitely don’t regret my time here at all. If you’re interested in becoming a part of RCIA, be sure to be on the lookout in the Rotman Portal for updates!
